1209 CONNECT 19 TWEETCOMMENTEMAILMOREWilmington University has qualified for its first NCAA Division II Baseball World Series and the Wildcats got there the hard way Sunday night.
No. 4-seeded Wilmington spotted St. Thomas Aquinas five first-inning runs but rallied for an 11-9 win in the Eastern Regionals title game at Franklin Pierce University's Pappas Field in Rindge, New Hampshire.
The Wildcats (37-13) responded with six runs of their own in the second inning and took the lead for good in the third inning.
Tyler Fries pitched the final 2 2/3 innings for his 14th save and got a popout and a strikeout to end the game with the No. 6-seeded Spartans' Jonathan McGugan at second after doubling in two runs. Fries was named tournament MVP.
This was Wilmington's fifth straight trip to the East Regionals and the title was its first. The NCAA Division II World Series is in Cary, North Carolina from May 23-30. Wilmington made four previous World Series appearances but those were as an NAIA school in 1984, 1992,http://www.lluviacaballo.com/Melomano.asp?toronto-maple-leafs-jersey-c-127_154.html, 1994 and 1995. Wilmington became an NCAA member in 2004-05.
"We've been working hard for a long time here," said Brian August,http://www.segoviaformacion.com/gallery.asp?Milwaukee-Brewers_a807.html, Wilmington's 11th-year coach,http://optimizaeventos.com/empresa.asp?Houston_Texans_Ladies_Jerseys, "and we finally got to it. It's a credit to how hard this program works. We've got 13 real tough seniors who've been in this situation the last three years and just the experience of getting here and they finally got it and they deserve it."
Matt Lopes was 4-for-4 with two doubles and two RBI as Wilmington pounded 17 hits in the title game. Christian Adorno was 3-for-4 with three RBI and Sean Feeney also had three hits.
St. Thomas Aquinas (30-19-1) managed 13 hits off five Wilmington pitchers, as Tyler Newton provided 3 2/3 innings of four-hit, one-run relief and Peter Monahan supplied 2 1/3 one-hit shutout innings. Fries struck out five and allowed three hits.

We just put it all together and Tyler Fries really stepped up on the mound again."
After losing for the first time in the tournament Saturday night/Sunday morning 7-3 to St. Thomas Aquinas, Wilmington had moved into the championship game by defeating nationally top-ranked and No. 1 seed Franklin Pierce 5-3 Sunday afternoon. It was just the fourth loss in 52 games this season for Franklin Pierce.
In that game, Wilmington scored four runs with two outs in the top of the fourth to take a 4-1 lead it never gave up. Singles by Lopes and Feeney started the rally, and Adorno then loaded the bases on a catcher's interference call. Mike Annone then lashed a two-run single, with a third run scoring when the ball was misplayed. Brendan Fallers then singled in pinch-runner Connor Stevens.
Lopes' single in the eighth scored Swirchak,http://www.streetsmartnv.com/wp-db.php?nfl-jackets-c-199_200.html, who'd been hit by a pitch, for Wilmington's fifth run.
Starter Ray Gambone (5-1) allowed six hits and struck out seven over seven innings. Jake Wersinger got one out in the eighth before Tyler Fries closed it.
