DENVER —  foundered as ’s replacement at third base.  thrived when he played instead. The writing was on the wall. The only surprise was how quickly the Giants made the move.
An organization that rarely cuts experienced players this early in the season acted decisively Sunday and designated McGehee for assignment, removing him from the roster so it could keep reliever  and maintain a 13-man pitching staff.
Duffy’s emergence also forced the quick decision.
“We see Duffy as our everyday third baseman right now,” general manager  said after he and manager  informed McGehee that he was designated before Sunday’s 11-2 loss to the Rockies.
McGehee, who hails from Santa Cruz County, had the worst homecoming imaginable. He batted .200 in 110 at-bats and grounded into a league-leading 12 double plays.
The contrast with Duffy could not have been starker. The 24-year-old rookie is batting .297 in 101 at-bats. He has driven in 19 runs, compared with nine for McGehee.
Given the roughly $3.5 million remaining on McGehee’s $4.8 million salary, the Giants have little chance of trading him during the 10-day designation window. Nor would another team be inclined to claim him on waivers.
Assuming he clears waivers, the Giants hope McGehee accepts an assignment to Triple-A to work on his swing. Otherwise, McGehee can declare himself a free agent. He gets his remaining salary even if he leaves.
“If he opts to do that, we’ll respect that and handle his decision when he makes it,” Evans said.
McGehee said that he cannot make that decision in “10 minutes” and that he needs to discuss it with his family. However, he told Evans and manager Bruce Bochy that he considers the Giants a great organization, close to home, and suggested that will be part of his deliberations.
If the 32-year-old does not play for the Giants again, one moment from his final game Saturday night will have symbolized his term.
Trying to score from second base as the trail runner on ’s single, McGehee slid feetfirst. He beat ’s throw, but his front foot came off the ground and he was tagged out before he touched the plate. In tagging him, Rockies catcher  elbowed McGehee in the head.
McGehee defiantly said that was not his last moment in the majors.
“I feel I’ve got a lot left in the tank and a lot left to offer,” he said. “I feel I’m the same guy who was (fourth) in the league in hits last year. I expect to get back to that. Wherever it is, I’m going to keep working hard until there’s nobody left who thinks I can do it.”
McGehee’s tenure with the Giants soured on Opening Night, when he incurred a bone bruise with an odd turn at third base.
Evans said he believes the injury played a part in McGehee’s struggles, calling the bone bruise a painful, disruptive injury. McGehee had none of that, saying, “Everybody’s got something bothering him. Nobody’s 100 percent. It’s nice of him to try to make excuses for you. I don’t need any excuses. If I go out there, I expect to perform.”
Before speaking with reporters, McGehee pulled Duffy into a small room in the visiting clubhouse at Coors Field to ensure that the rookie knew he had no reason to feel bad about McGehee’s fate. McGehee said he felt guilty when he took ’s job in Milwaukee as a rookie.
“He should be proud that he forced the issue to the point where you’ve got to get him on the field,” McGehee said. “That’s what his job is.”
Bochy said that Duffy has excelled at all he was asked to do and that the team is confident he can maintain his success as an everyday player.
“I think he’s earned his playing time,” Bochy said.
The Giants were in a bind because they have used their bullpen liberally, particularly during the four-game series in Denver, which included a doubleheader. They have no off days until June 4 and cannot use  in relief for several days because he threw 81 pitches in a spot start Saturday.
The club expects to stick with 13 pitchers through that off day. They had to cut a position player and decided to designate McGehee rather than demote Duffy, the only non-regular with minor-league options.
“I’m a little concerned with how much we’re using these guys,” Bochy said of his relievers. “We’ve got to get the pen back in order.”
The Giants were forced by rule to option Strickland back to Sacramento after Saturday night’s game because he was promoted to be the 26th player in the doubleheader. But the same rules allowed the Giants to recall Strickland immediately, without having to wait at least 10 days under the traditional rules.
Another big decision looms. The Giants must decide by Monday whether to place  on the 25-man roster or designate him. Given that the Giants need the extra pitcher and just removed a position player, the writing on the wall seems clear there, too.
